How does Oppo scrape their windshield?

This morning I was sitting in traffic behind a Civic with one working brake light and the slowest reflexes in human history. Obviously I was already judging pretty hard, and then I realized they scraped the frost off their rear window vertically.

On a scale of one to track sushi, how wrong was that decision?

Depends on the curvature of the glass and the ergonomics of reach. I usually find myself scraping the front and rear glass horizontally, and the side windows vertically.

WD-40. It’s like magic juice that you can use in every situation.

T he trick was to douse the windshield in WD-40...

.... And then light it.

I usually don’t need to scrape. I let the defrosters do most of the wort then just brush it off :o)

I scrape them all horizontally, but now that my truck lives in the garage again full time I don’t really scrape them at all anymore.

Mercifully, I haven’t had to do so for years! I have a spray though.

If you buy a Skoda you get a scraper as standard.

I scrape the wiper area.

I’m kinda spoiled though, I don’t have a hood and can stand right in front of it.

Counter point:  I can’t extend my wiper arms before an ice storm because someone will walk into them.

I keep a Garth Brooks cassette tape for scraping my windshield. It works great and it’s small enough to fit in a door pocket.

Whatever direction suits the curve of the glass best. Vertical on the sides and horizontal on the windshield, rear windows vary a bit. Generally cars are horizontal but a lot of SUVs and hatches work best vertical.

This is fair. I wanted to leave faster than that was going to happen in 16F weather this morning, so I had to scrape the front.

Windshield and rear window horizontally, door windows vertically because the Solara has framless win dows and its easier to avoid hitting the window seals if I scrape vertically. I love frameless doors but im extra nervous about  the door seals getting damaged because of that.

Depends on the vehicle. On my truck, the back window gets scraped vertically because I’m standing right in the middle of it.

For a car not even sure how you’d scrape it vertically when your leaning over the snow on the side reaching over.

Then again, maybe they stood behind the trunk because the CVCC is so small?

I do front and back horizontally with the scraper (though I may brush vertically).

I haven’t had to scrape at all this year (knock on wood). So far, all the frost has happened overnight, and my garage is heated.

But, when it does happen, I spray with deicer and brush off, after putting the defroster on full blast. Scrape horizontally to finish off, if needed.

If it’s thick, I’ll flip the scraper over to the toothed side and cut some nice cross-hatching into the ice. This makes it easier to scrape off with the smooth/straight side. I make it a point to clear the whole windscreen, front and rear.

I will pour tap water over the window sometimes, though I haven’t experienced 16 degrees in many, many moons.

But to your question, my daughters malign me for overthinking things and even I  would not have thought anything of vertical scrapage. My suggestion would be to let this one slide.

I have a huge cargo van with a stubby front end, so I have to do it vertically or I miss a big part of the windshield.

For the front of the equinox side to side, then try and scoop the remainder out, the A-pillar is 2-3” above the windshield. Bad design. I’ll wipe the back down, and scrape vertically. I scraped the ice from the back of my metro once and the plastic scraper blade grudges right through the paint as there is a bit of a vertical extension of the roofline that the hatch is built in. Equinox has sort of same.

I don’t know the right way, but I know the wrong way.

Step one: Wake up late for work.

Step two: Yell at the windshield for being icy.

Step three: Scrape for about 30 seconds, making minimal progress.

Step four: Ride your motorcycle to work.

Step five: Freeze to your core.

Both, actually. I scrape the driver’s side of my truck’s windshield with m y extendo scraper horizontally, which gets about 2/3 of the windshield. On the passenger side, because the antenna is in the way, I’ve found it easier to do the rest vertically reaching around the antenna.

3 cars, 2 garage bays, and 1 burned out garage door opener mandating manual door operation means at least one car (and usually two) are getting the scraper.

Scraping is for suckers. Clear the rear with the defroster and the front with anti-ice washer fluid.

I’m more just puzzled how someone who is obviously exceptionally lazy managed to find the hardest way possible to remove ice from the rear window of a sedan.

Also I wouldn’t have noticed but they left so many clumps of ice at the top of the windshield that I spent several minutes in awe at the size of (what I thought was) bird crap. Then I realized it was ice. Then I was confused and also way too invested.

I mean I guess if I had anti-ice washer fluid I could also clear the rear with that before the defroster was done, but the car is going to need to warm up for a bit anyway and I’d rather have something to do!

Kinja'd!!! shop-teacher > smobgirl

It may have more to do with where this person parks. If it’s in a narrow spot, and the trunk of the sedan is short, as they tend to be these days, it might actually be easier to scrape it vertically.

Of course it's also possible they're just batcrap crazy!

Start up car, rear defroster, scrap vertical and horizontal for both windshield and side. Washer fluid to take any missed spots.

Kinja'd!!! Dusty Ventures > smobgirl
01/12/2020 at 12:20

Kinja'd!!!0

I was half joking. If it’s just a thin layer of frost I’ll use the fluid front and rear, it’s actually way faster than the scraper. Probably shortens the life of the wiper blades, but they’re almost a year old and just barely starting to show lines so it can’t be too bad I guess. For proper ice or snow I’ll start the car, turn the rear defroster on, then start scraping the front (horizontally of course, I’m not a sociopath). I’ll then do the driver side, and if snow the roof, and by the time I get to the back the defroster will usually have it soft enough that I can wipe it all off with the rubber squeegee on my scraper.
